Personality: Alison can be rather timid at times. The issues with her breathing taught her to be more cautious of other humans. However, around other races she is rather more excited, wanting to study their culture and way of living. She also has a rather bad habit of dropping her sentences in favour of examining something interesting. When excited, Alison will either ramble on at length or fade into silent thought.

Background

Only child of Daniel and Jennifer Cardell, Alison was raised in a strange but loving home. While out on a dig on a yet-unnamed planet, Jennifer unknowingly conceived. As the air was toxic but in safe levels, neither Daniel nor Jennifer wore masks or helmets when they could help it. Citing that it took away from the experience, they were breathing the toxic air.

Several months later, the young archaeologists finally realized their error, cutting the dig short by almost 2 full years. A few short weeks after arriving at the nearest medical facility on a colonized word, Alison Cardell was born 6 week premature, neither breathing or moving. It took nearly 8 hours to get her stable enough that the doctors could examine her.

For all that medical science could do, her parents were told that there was scar tissue in her lungs and they weren't sure the damage could be repaired. While she would have diminished lung function and difficulty breathing in a more arid climate, she would not have to worry too heavily in slightly more toxic environments. However, her parents were told, Alison would need to carry oxygen with her as she could start suffering from hypoxia almost at random.

A series of tutors and private schools helped supplement her education while she was still young. As time went on, she became more independent in her studies, enrolling in university as soon as she was given the opportunity.

Over the years, through university and into her professional career, Alison was always fascinated by the Protheans. As a result, she became the foremost human expert on them, surpassing some asari scientists as well.
